Audit suggests ethical/legal problems with President Bush's Reading First education program

Ouch! NBC news, as other media outlets, reported today that President Bushs's Reading First program has been plauged by all kinds of ethical problems. Check out the link and read and decide for yourself. I'm sure more information will be coming via education blogs and sites in the next week or so.

I found this news quite frustrating and would be highly interested in hearing specifically what was mismanaged.

As a school psychologist in a Reading First school-I can attest that I have been very impressed with the training, curriculum, and tenets that have been set forth by the district to meet the Reading First standards. One of our kindergarten teachers whom I consider a "Master Teacher" mentioned that she cannot believe what this is doing for student reading (although complains that the focus on literacy has taken time away from character development-but comments on remarkable literacy gains nevertheless.)

The Reading First initiative is on the right track in terms of what is advocated-but clearly any ethical violations should be investigated.
